Duolingo, founded in 2009 by German-Guatemalan entrepreneur Luis van Ahn, emerged from Ahn’s experiences as an English language learner and his desire to make language education accessible to all. Previously known for creating reCAPTCHA, Ahn’s interest in crowd-sourcing led him to address the challenge of translating the internet into multiple languages. Recognizing the limitations of computer translations and the cost of human translators, Ahn and his research assistant, Severin Hacker, developed Duolingo to engage millions of people in translating the web for free.
